Time To Make Room

Development Plans - Update

April 2023-March 2024

Biojemmss owns a 6.9 acre piece of land in Kitaziguruka, Kanyinya, Rukungiri District.

We purchased this in 2020 so we could develop the facilities we needed to create our forever home, and make room for more children to benefit from our support. This has become desperately needed as our current rental premises are too small to meet growing demand, and do not have the facilities we need.

In our latest newsletter, we promised you further details about our exciting development plans for this year for our land and how YOU can be part of this project.

Time has come for us to MAKE IT HOME and to MAKE ROOM for us to reach, rescue and restore more children from abuse and exploitation.

Biojemmss already has children on waiting lists that meet our high-risk criteria, and children and families attending our rental office every day sharing of their suffering and need. These children are out of school, and often experiencing harm. We already serve children in more than 50% of the surrounding district, and these developments would enable us to help the children still coming through our doors.

We established a Four Stage Plan for the first 12 months of this construction project (details of the four stages can be found below).

We have successfully completed Stage One of our plans, alongside having established and recently expanded livestock and agricultural endeavours.

Our next priority is Stage Two which is to build our water system to provide the land and surrounding communities with an adequate clean water supply.

The designed water system will provide safe water for our crops and livestock, along with our sanitation system and providing the water needed for domestic chores, cooking, and drinking water for the 1450 individuals who will attend the new premises per month for our programmes and wider support.

The proposed water system will also provide safe water access to several communities including Marumba B, Marumba C, Kafunjo and Kararuka Villages. Currently the community uses a water pump in the local school grounds for their household use. This often breaks down with regular use and is frequently closed for repairs. The pump is closed during the long holiday periods, leading to community members getting up early in the morning to walk more than a two-kilometre hilly walk to collect water from dirty streams. It is often children who walk unaccompanied to collect water. During these times there is an increase in the cases of abuse, rape and gender-based violence reported.

A comprehensive water system will cost us £12,932 to cover preliminaries, hydrology survey, borehole construction, pump installation, the tank stands, and transmission and distribution systems across the land.

If you would like the full plans for this system, please email us at info@biojemmss.com.

Stage One

Complete the project plans, architectural designs and costings for the land development and construction

Stage Two

Raise needed funds and build our comprehensive water system

Biojemmss will undertake essential preparation including a hydrology survey before constructing a borehole 80 metres deep. A pump will then be installed, alongside a 4-meter-high tank stand to hold a 10,000-litre tank and the connecting mechanisms.

Stage Three

Sanitation (incl Toilet Facilities) and electrical supply

Stage Four

To construct our primary building -our community facilities (including meetings rooms, offices, spaces for safe play and delivering counselling etc)

We have created the Make Room Appeal for stages 2-4 of this project development.
